Medieval Monday Talk #87 – More Events

Greetings, medievalists!

Last time, we talked about hiring help. This time, let’s talk about some other events we are working on.

One thing we want to improve is the feeling that the world around your settlement is alive. Well, as best as we can given the game’s limitations. You should not just have raids, merchants and representatives of religions in your settlement. These are medieval times! Sometimes people need help. Sometimes they bring trouble. And sometimes they bring information that makes you question what kind of settlement you are actually running.

So, let’s go through a few examples.

One new event we are working on is a faction seeking refuge. A group of visitors may arrive at your settlement tired, hungry, and in poor condition. Their stats will not be great, and they will need help if you choose to provide it.

You can feed them, give them a place to sleep, let them recover, and treat them with some basic human decency. It ain’t much but it is honest work.

There is also a variation where the group will be chased by wolves. In that case, some of them may arrive wounded, and your clinic can help them recover. But the wolves may not be done with them yet, so you’ll need to take care of that, too.

Another event is a friendly gift. A friendly NPC may arrive at the edge of the map, travel to your settlement, bring you something useful, and then head back home – asking nothing in return. Sometimes, people want to do better and you deserve a break. Not everything needs to end violently.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuttt…

You can decide to be a terrible person. But actions have consequences, and if you harm someone who came to you in good faith, their people will not exactly appreciate it.

Speaking of violence… We are also working on an ambush opportunity event.

You know those moments when your caravans get ambushed and you think, “Well, that was rude”? Now, sometimes, you may get information about someone else’s caravan passing through a certain area. You may learn when they will be there, how many guards they have, and roughly how valuable or heavy their goods are. And then you can decide what to do with that information.

Maybe you ignore it. Maybe you prepare an attack. Maybe you finally release all that accumulated anger from previous ambushes.

The idea behind these events is to add more texture to the world. We want more moments where you are not just reacting to raids or waiting for merchants, but making choices about what kind of settlement you are building. Are you generous? Practical? Opportunistic? Horrible, but efficient? The game should give you more room to answer that.

These events also help factions feel more present. They can ask for help, offer help, bring danger, reward kindness, or punish cruelty. Not every event needs to be huge, but even smaller moments can make the world feel more connected.

As always, these systems are still being worked on, so details may change before they arrive in the game. But this is the direction we want to push toward – more encounters, more choices, and more stories that happen because of what you decide to do.

Let us know what you think.

Would you help a wounded group at your gate? Would you take the gift and wave politely? Or would you ambush a caravan because, technically, nobody told you not to? Let us know in the comments, and don’t forget to…

Stay medieval!
